During this semester, there has been a friendly challenge to encourage one of our very own Kairos 3 leader to lose a certain amount of weight by June 2009. We’ll just call him Brother K on condition of anonymity.

The challenge is simple: Brother K needs to lose a predetermined amount of weight by June 2009. If he does not, his friends like Andy in Kairos 2 and Tony in Kairos 1, who agreed to keep him accountable will need to ante up an unspecified amount, each, into the Kairos fund. And as consolation, I will treat Brother K and Kairos 3 staff to Fresh Choice to eat some healthy humble pie in the spirit of oneness.

On the other hand, if Brother K loses the required weight by June 2009, I will treat Brother K and Kairos 3 staff to Fresh Choice to celebrate his hard earned work.

There have been sightings of Brother K running through the mean streets of Alameda as his main mode of transportation.

I overheard someone say to Brother K, “Wow, if you pull this off, you could very well be the poster child of determination, excellence and healthy living.”

So 3 weeks 7 weeks (extension) away… what do you think will happen? Sound off…

My friend Tom just modified his url for his famous Dish Gracepoint Fellowship Church website.

It’s a great place to learn how to cook en masse or lightening fast meals. You can also find weekly best deals for meat in Berkeley or Alameda grocery stores.

Look, you can cook a meal that’ll look like this… Only at Dish Gracepoint Fellowship Church.

….well, not quite.  But as I (Ken) had the chance to visit Koinonia-Hsinchu and Gracepoint-Hsinchu in Taiwan this past week, I found that one of the activities that the staff and students like to engage in was to play American football!

I was genuinely surprised and pleased to see that the Taiwanese students seem to have an innate grasp of this truly American game!  During the time I was there, our football coaches–Kan and Harty–instructed us on the rules  of the game, then we spent about thirty mintues just doing various drills, learning different routes, and practicing passing and catching.

Then the game was an exciting, all-offensive shootout.  Despite not knowing how to throw a football prior to the day’s practice, one Taiwanese student (Patrick) mastered the short passing game and recorded two touchdowns!  Another Taiwanese student was a speedy receiver with great size (Tiger) and he quickly out-jumped and out-caught the rest of the playing field.

As for myself I had an excellent afternoon reliving the glorious junior-high days when I was the neighborhood quaterback in the Big Ten county of Chicago, Illinois:  4 passes, 3 completions, 2 touchdowns, 1 interception, which means I pretty much slinged the ball to the endzone every chance I got.

Playing American football is really a great way to fellowship.  I think with some practice and experience, these Taiwanese students may be able to take on Andy, Ryan, and the rest of Kairos 2 in a friendly game of football.  What do you think?

Albert with Kairos 3!

Albert with Kairos 3!

A few weeks ago our very own, Albert Wang, got dunked or as we say, baptized, along with 24 other members of our church. Baptism is a public declaration of an individual’s decision to surrender their life to God. Many of the baptism candidates thanked the many many people in their lives that helped them get to an understanding of their human condition and God as the only solution.

We thank God for this celebration and the opportunity to share in Albert’s joy.

Last week, Kairos had an AMAZING time going down the concrete slide at Cordonices Park in Berkeley in the middle of the night! This video doesn’t do justice the thrill and shear delight of the experience. But you get a decent flavor…. Oh and then we had glow in the dark Frisbees.

I love Friday nights!
